1. From the Pew Forum: Many Americans Mix Multiple Faiths

The religious beliefs and practices of Americans do not fit neatly into conventional categories. A new poll by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life finds that large numbers of Americans engage in multiple religious practices, mixing elements of diverse traditions. Many say they attend worship services of more than one faith or denomination -- even when they are not traveling or going to special events like weddings and funerals. Many also blend Christianity with Eastern or New Age beliefs such as reincarnation, astrology and the presence of spiritual energy in physical objects. And sizeable minorities of all major U.S. religious groups say they have experienced supernatural phenomena, such as being in touch with the dead or with ghosts.

2. The Anti-Gospel of Yeshu the Magician, a medieval Hebrew take on Jesus. Wiki: "It ascribes to Jesus an illegitimate birth, magic powers, and a shameful death. Its main point is that "Jesus is a seducer and heretic." I guess it was a sort of push back against the antisemitism of the age? "We didna betray the Messiah...he was a fake!!!" sort of deal.

Sepher Toldoth Yeshu means "Book of Generations of Jesus," but rather than it being one single story, it is a midrashic literary tradition, made up of two variant medieval manuscripts collected together some time between 300 and 700 A.D.
...
The material that is known to have existed in ancient times comes from Christian sources who reference them like Tertullian and Origen from the early 200s, as well as St. Epiphanius and St. Jerome from the late 300s. The Toldoth Yeshu, or "Toledot Jeschu," was first translated into English by Richard Carlile in 1823 and consists of the only known traditions about Jesus to have ever been written in the language of his own people.

02:39 am - Vaticans move to canonize WWII Pope
In an effort to calm growing tensions with Jewish groups, the Vatican said Wednesday that Pope Benedict XVI’s decision moving the wartime pope Pius XII closer to sainthood was not a “hostile act” against those who believe Pius did not do enough to stop the Holocaust.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, issued a statement saying that the beatification process evaluated the “Christian life” of Pius, who reigned from 1939 to 1958, and not “the historical impact of all his operative decisions.”

Moving Pius toward sainthood “is in no way to be read as a hostile act towards the Jewish people, and it is to be hoped that it will not be considered as an obstacle on the path of dialogue between Judaism and the Catholic Church,” Father Lombardi wrote.

I have always been torn on Pope Pius XII. I don't think that he did nearly as much as he should have done during the war, and I have always been appalled at his baffling silence about the Pavelić regime in Croatia (mainly because it was Catholic priest who perpetrated many of the atrocieties there). He also stood by as 1000 Roman Jews were deported to Auchwitz and some recent documents confirm that he at least knew about Nazi ratlines after the war.
But by many accounts he also saved a lot of lives by ordering priests to hide Jews in churches and he did (sometimes) condemn the Nazi atrocities.

  What do you guys think?

10:31 am - Atheist Xmas
Recently someone asked us what we atheists do for whatevermas, and the answers were a bit sparse. Here are some additional ideas, if you're lacking ;)

(apologies to those of us who read pharyngula and have already seen it)

I especially like "decorating the phylogenetic tree" - but I'm easy to amuse.

06:40 am - Xmas for an atheist
If you have a family, and are an atheist, like me, you probably have some traditions that you have adapted to meet your religion-free lifestyle.  I just wanted to share one of mine.  When I was a Christian, we would read the nativity story from one of the New Testament gospels.  Well, the whole story telling thing is still fun, but now we read the Christmas chapter from the book Little House on the Prairie.  Ii has no mention of 'god' or 'Jesus', just beautiful story that brings back the simplicity of Christmas and might even make you weep tears of joy.  Just wanted to share.  I posted the entire story here: http://community.livejournal.com/godlessjoy .

05:41 pm - Good Without God author on NPR, ABC this week
I got an e-mail from the Secular Student Alliance announcing that the chair of their advisory board, Greg Epstein, will be interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air tomorrow, Wednesday, 12/23/09 and by Diane Sawyer on ABC's World News on Sunday, 12/27. Epstein is the author of Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe and is also the Humanist Chaplain at Harvard University. If you miss Terry Gross's interview, you can always listen to the podcast. If you're not familiar with her work, she is a very thoughtful and intelligent journalist, and her interviews are always worth listening to.

06:07 am - Some Recent Interesting Articles
Review Of 'Avatar'
Jeffrey Weiss' review of Avatar in Politics Daily zeroed in on something that also interested me when I saw the movie. In James Cameron's world, the new-agey-sounding religion of the Na'vi is actually literally true -- they really are part of a unified world mind, and can literally tap into the stored thoughts and memories of their ancestors. Weiss thought that it weakened Avatar's impact as allegory; I thought it was probably Cameron's way to get around his own discomfort with fuzzy mysticism, and make the Na'vi more in tune with his own materialistic sympathies. What do you think?

Another article by the same author explores Christian themes in Harry Potter, should you ever want to respond to anybody who thinks the books are Satanic.

Boy Punished For Drawing Cross In Class
Another tale from the culture wars; my bullshit detector went ballistic just reading the headline. As you might expect, there's more to the story than the irate father would have you believe. The father's last words put it all into perspective, don't they?

Fortunately, some Christians seem to get it.

01:23 am - Inmates sue over Christmas music being piped into prison
Christmas songs, they either make you want to sing along - or pull your own ears off and baste the turkey with them.

That's why we find ourselves in the strange position of (almost) feeling sorry for US prisoners who are being subjected to a non-stop Christmas playlist.

Jail bosses in Maricopa County, Arizona, have started playing a selection of Christmas music and hymns into the prisons, and will continue to do so for the rest of the holiday period. The music is played all day in all jails and includes songs and melodies from all countries and faiths in many languages, KPHO-TV in Phoenix reported. In years past, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has personally chosen some of the songs and performers featured, including tunes from Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Bing Crosby and Doctor Demento.

While they say the annual tradition is intended to give "a little Christmas cheer" to the incarcerated crooks, many of the prisoners claim it is an added punishment.
Some have even filed lawsuits claiming cruel and unusual punishment and forced participation in religious celebrations - we guess it all depends on how often they play Cliff.

The sheriff's office has said it expects courts to dismiss the lawsuits. Source: www.asylum.co.uk/2009/12/18/inmates-sue-for-being-subjected-to-christmas-songs/   What do you guys think? A violation of prisoner's rights? Or just some holiday cheer?

05:21 pm - Just to show how backward WE are

You think United States of America are not backward?

Consider this:

A recent Harris poll included questions on evolution and creationism, with unsurprising results. According to Harris's report (PDF), those surveyed were given a list of topics — including God, miracles, heaven, Jesus as God or the son of God, angels, survival of the soul after death, the resurrection of Jesus, Hell, the virgin birth, the Devil, "Darwin's theory of evolution," ghosts, creationism, UFOs, astrology, witches, and reincarnation — and asked, "Please indicate for each one if you believe in it, or not." For evolution, 45% of respondents indicated that they believed in it, 32% indicated that they don't believe in it, and 22% indicated that they were not sure. For creationism, 40% of respondents indicated that they believed in it, 30% indicated that they don't believe in it, and 30% indicated that they were not sure.

The results varied by religion: 51% of Catholics, 32% of Protestants, 80% of Jews, and 16% of born-again Christians believed in Darwin's theory of evolution, while 37% of Catholics, 56% of Protestants, 20% of Jews, and 68% of born-again Christians believed in creationism. Overall, the results were basically unchanged from 2007, when 42% of respondents believed in evolution and 39% of respondents believed in creationism. The poll was conducted on-line on November 2 and 11, 2009, among 2303 adults in the United States; figures were weighted to reflect the composition of the adult population. "Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel," the report explains, "no estimates of theorical sampling error can be calculated."

40% of our own society believe Creation's story over the Evolution! 55% do not believe in Evolution or are unsure! We're so far behind other nations that our being backward is not even an opinion. IT'S A FACT!

I wonder how many people believe in the Theory of Gravitation?

03:05 pm - Well, really it's Christian infighting, but it is amusing. No joking about god sex!
LATEST: A mischievous billboard about to be hoisted by an Auckland church and intended to provoke conversation about spiritual matters at Christmas has raised the ire of a Christian lobby group. Family First NZ labelled the billboard to be put up by by St Matthew-in-the-City Church as insensitive and objectionable to many people. The billboard will feature an illustration the church itself felt could disturb some. On it, Mary and Joseph are in bed. Joseph looks down dejected. Mary looks sad. The caption reads: "Poor Joseph. God is a hard act to follow." It was intended to challenge stereotypes about the way that Jesus was conceived and get people talking about the Christmas story, the church said. Archdeacon Glynn Cardy said it had already generated plenty of discussion in its "conception phase". But Family First national director Bob McCoskrie describes the church's plan as irresponsible. "The church can have its debate on the virgin birth and its spiritual significance inside the church building, but to confront children and families with the concept as a street billboard is completely irresponsible and unnecessary," he said. "The church has failed to recognise that public billboards are exposed to all of the public including children and families who may be offended by the material." Mr Cardy said on the church's website that "the true importance of Christmas" was in the radical hospitality Jesus offered to the poor, the despised, women, children, and the sick. "His death was a consequence of the offensive nature of that hospitality and his resurrection a symbolic vindication." Last week a campaign by New Zealand Atheist Bus Campaign raised $20,000 in public donations to fund bus ads which read "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life".

Those ads created a storm when they ran on the London Underground and British buses this year. Similar ads have run in the United States, Canada, Italy, Spain, Australia, Finland and Germany. Source

ETA: Ok, before this gets too out of hand I want to say something about what I was trying to do with this poll. I wasn't trying to be comprehensive. If I was I'd quickly see this thing go "goth". That is to say I'd be seeing things like Progressive Goth Metal, Goth Speed Metal, Traditional Goth, Neo Goth, New Wave Goth, Death Goth, Goth Goth, etc. That's why I put in that piece about "Select the answer that most CLOSELY matches your political beliefs." I couldn't possibly include them all. If you are a Liberal Socialist just choose one. No one will blame you. If you are an ProgressiveSocialistLiberalConservative then just choose the one that's closest, guys.
